My name is Maaia Reid Bennett, I love surfing is because you have to constantly improve, you cannot perfect this sport. So it’s always a good challenge. I also enjoy the feeling of being out in the water, surfing different waves all the time. What I love the most is a fun summers day out in the surf with the mount girls and Mum, Dad, little brother and little sister. Competing is another reason because it helps me to keep improving and it allows me to travel around New Zealand and the chance to travel the world!
Around about 5 years coming up my 6th.
Body glove, lower and eyeshapes surfboards.
What’s your quiver:
5’1, 5’4 and 5’4
Maimais, M-Dawg and Mahia.
Where do you live:
Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.
When and how did you first get into surfing:
Well basically my whole family surfs so that had a large impact on my surfing. But I think it was when I enter the mataphihi surf comp when I was round 10, Dad was pushing me off on my purple foamy and I managed to win it. And from then I just loved the feeling of surfing and wanted to keep pushing myself to get better.
I’ve only travelled to Australia and I managed to surf most of the famous breaks around Gold Coast, Coolengatta and Lennox heads.
Favourite Place to surf:
Whanagamata Bar, Matakana Island and Lennox heads.
Your Stance on localism:
Respect the locals and they will hopefully respect you.
Your perfect surf session:
A Gurf session for sure! All the mount girls out having a good time, catching lots of fun nuggets and laughing. No wind and bikini water temperature. And then go in for some food and go back out till dark.
Every now and then try play the piano. I also enjoy playing volley ball. Hanging with my friends and family. And of course going on social media. And I enjoy art, writing and taking photos.
Goals for this year:
I want to keep improving my surfing and just do the things I love.
Most inspirational surfing figure in your life/growing up:
Probably my Dad.
Would you rather have 1 Million Dollars or perfect waves the rest of your life:
I would rather have one million dollars, because I could use that money to travel around the world searching for perfect waves. As I also want to be able to surf crappy waves because I find it a good challenge.
